MESSAGE FROM HOUSE SPEAKER CHARLIE
DEWITT
Did you know that less than half of
young adults age 18-24 are registered to vote? And of that number only
33 percent went to the polls in the 2000 national election?
That is why America’s Legislators Back
to School Week is such a worthwhile and important program. It provides
an incentive for us to take the time to go into classrooms and talk to
our young people - the voters and leaders of tomorrow - about civic
responsibility, our role as legislators, and why voting is a privilege.
And what better time to do this than during an election year.
Last year’s program reached over 30,000 students in 200 schools
across our state. I am proud that Louisiana had the second highest
participation rate in the country and that our program has received
accolades and awards from business and professional groups to education
organizations, teachers, and parents. This program also helps us to
build personal links between schools and legislators and provides us
with an opportunity to observe the schools in our districts.
If you have any questions about this
program you can e-mail us or call our House coordinators at the address
or number listed below. We want to make this year’s program even more
successful.
