The Battle of New Orleans The Battle of New Orleans took place during the War of 1812 between Great Britain and the US on the Plains of Chalmette, ten miles south of New Orleans. General Andrew Jackson led his army of militia fighters, frontiersmen, free men of color, Indians, and pirates against Great Britain’s superior forces and won. The victory is considered to be the last great battle of the War of 1812. The victory is regarded as symbolic of the idea of American democracy over Great British aristocracy and entitlement. For decades, America celebrates January 8 as a national holiday.
