NEW 2018 CORNERSTONE
Cornerstone located at the southwest base of the Louisiana State Capitol. The dates, 1803 and 1931, are etched at the bottom of the cornerstone indicating the date of the Louisiana Purchase and the date the cornerstone was laid. In 1803, the United States purchased 828,000 square miles of territory from France for 15 million dollars in a land deal known as the Louisiana Purchase. The Louisiana Purchase consisted of what is now known as 15 states with Louisiana being the first state within the territory being admitted into the Union as the 18th state.. Construction of the State Capitol started on December 16, 1930 with the cornerstone being laid in place on May 7, 1931. It took 14 months for the final completion of the Capitol when it was dedicated to the citizens of Louisiana on May 16, 1932. The material needed to build the State Capitol was so massive that a secondary track was used by the railroad system to allow materials to be dropped off at the site. It took 200 carloads of limestone, 50 of marble, 26 of granite, 285 of sand, 240 of gravel, 190 of cement, 108 of bricks, 500 of tile, 20 of terrazzo, 30 of bronze, 24 of ornamental iron and 100 of structural and reinforcing steel.
