INTERNSHIP PROGRAM ESTABLISHED AT LSU MEDICAL CENTER

Rep. Pinkie Carolyn Wilkerson, D-Grambling, is pleased to announce the establishment of an internship program to provide pre-professional opportunities for Grambling State University students in the health care field.

This internship program, based at the Louisiana State University (LSU) Medical Center at New Orleans, gives students the opportunity to work directly in administrative or managerial positions as college students in the medical health care field, said Wilkerson.

Wilkerson, author of the legislation (HCR 2 1998 Regular Session) which led to the creation of the program, said, "A career in medical administration and management offers a wide range of opportunities to work in positions which vary from hospital administrators to financial analysts for hospitals and managed-care corporations. I am particularly interested that our students have practical, on-the-job experience. These students can gain a wealth of knowledge by participating in a health care setting where the education experience could lead to employment in the medical field after graduation."

Wilkerson said, "I especially commend Dr. Mervin Trail, Chancellor of the LSU Medical Center and Dr. Allen Copping for their interest in Grambling State."

"Administrators and managers with excellent communication skills and those with a thorough knowledge of the health care industry will be the most valuable to hospitals and health care corporations employers," Wilkerson said. I’m committed to providing significant opportunities for Grambling State students," she said.

The current contract amount allocated to Grambling State University is $63,981, the maximum amount presently authorized. The Medical Center is working on contracts to make the internship program available to other Louisiana universities. Program eligibility will be announced at a later date.
