SPEAKER DOWNER'S STATEMENT ON DEATH OF STATE REP. BILL STRAIN

"It is with deep sadness that I inform you of the death of state Rep. Bill Strain, a colleague and a friend. I served with Bill since 1976. He brought to the House real world experience with a no-nonsense approach. His constituents were always first in mind in all of his deliberations. As a successful businessman with multi-state operations, he had a keen sense of the needs of the business community and believed in practical government. He will be fondly remembered by the entire body. His nearly 30 years of legislative service and knowledge will not be easily replaced."

Downer said funeral arrangements are incomplete at this time.

Strain, who chaired the House Agriculture Committee, represented House District 74 which encompasses parts of St. Tammany, Tangipahoa and Washington parishes. He was elected to his legislative seat in 1971. Downer said the district office will remain open for the needs of the district's constituents.

Strain is survived by his wife Betty and three children.
